15. Headlights, hazard lights and warning devices Headlights

Headlights and tail lights are very important visual aids when driving. As a driver, headlights illuminate the way in dark or poor weather conditions. Headlights also inform other drivers and road users that you are moving on the road. You can use high-beam headlights to further illuminate your path, if necessary. Tail lights are illuminated when your headlights are on. They show vehicles travelling behind you that you are ahead. When you brake, your brake lights illuminate in addition to your tail lights. Your brake lights indicate to drivers behind you that you are slowing or stopping. To be considered roadworthy, your car must always have:

• two working headlights
• two working tail lights
• two working brake lights, and
• a working number plate light. Only use your headlights on high beam when you are:

200m 200m

• more than 200 metres behind another vehicle
• more than 200 metres from any oncoming vehicle.

Never use your lights to dazzle another road user.
